‘Age wears you down’: Ripper Roasts announces closure after four decades of service
Known to generations of Geelong families, it’s time to shut up shop for Ripper Roasts. But there are plans for the future.
After four decades of serving hearty roast meals and creating countless memories for Geelong residents, Ripper Roasts has announced it will close its doors forever.
The restaurant, located at 362 Latrobe Tce in Newtown, made the announcement in a heartfelt Facebook post, thanking “loyal customers” for their unwavering support over the years.
“After 40 years we will be closing our doors,” the post stated.
“Whether you stopped in for a meal, grabbed a takeaway on a busy day, or ordered catering through us, we thank you for supporting our business.
“You have truly made these four decades unforgettable.”
Ripper Roasts, known for its roast meats, including pork, lamb, beef and chicken, as well as an “impressive” selection of vegetables, has been a mainstay in the Geelong dining scenesince it first opened its doors in 1985.
Owner Wayne Freedman said after four decades in business, it was simply time to step away.
“You sorta get to that stage where you’ve had enough … age wears you down,” Mr Freedman said.
“My dad worked ‘til he was 78 and I don’t want to do that.
“Any business that lasts that long is an institution.
“A lot of businesses come and go … it’s hard to survive as a small business.”
The family owned restaurant became a popular destination for locals seeking a quick and comforting roast, served every evening from 4pm to 8pm.
“You do have your regulars and see generations come through … I’ll miss that interaction,” Mr Freedman said.
“People 40 years ago, and now their children and grandchildren come through.”
Ripper Roasts also built a strong reputation for its catering services, including a memorable event where it served food to 3500 guests.
The restaurant was originally located at 362 Latrobe Tce before relocating a couple doors down at 350 Latrobe Tce 20 years ago.
Despite the closure, there is hope a new business will take over the restaurant space and potentially reopen “in February under a similar format”.
“They currently own a chicken shop,” Mr Freedman said.
The closure of Ripper Roasts follows a trend of longstanding businesses in the region closing their doors.
Recently, Red Rooster’s flagship Geelong store suddenly closed its doors after nearly 20 years, with burger chain Grill’d to take over the prime Fyans St location.
Piping Hot Chicken in Ocean Grove also shut down after 40 years of business, with its location now set to be taken over by Smokey Soul.
Ripper Roasts’ last day will be December 24, 2025.
