New eatery to fill Piping Hot Chicken shopfront

The Ocean Grove shopfront left empty by Piping Hot Chicken’s closure has found a new tenant that promises “something bigger than burgers”.

The shopfront left vacant by the closure of Bellarine institution Piping Hot Chicken will soon be filled.

Smokey Soul, which promises to be “something bigger than a burger shop”, is set to open on The Terrace in Ocean Grove.

“Almost time to get excited … coming soon,” the shop posted online on Friday, the latest in a long list of teasers that date back more than a month.

It remains unclear exactly when the new shop will open, with the business keeping its menu close to its chest.

However, it appears American style smash burgers will be front and centre, having asked followers: “How many smashed burgers are too many?”

A sign for the business has been placed in the window of the shopfront, which still bears the signage of its predecessor.

Piping Hot Chicken closed its doors in mid-2024, something owner Tami McAdam at the time said caused her “much sadness”.

“It has been my great pleasure to be the custodian of this iconic venue over the past eight years,” she posted online.

“I am so sad to have to close, but it is no longer sustainable to continue.”

Ms McAdam said rising costs had made staying open “truly challenging”.

“I have tried to make it work,” she said.

“Thank you to all our loyal customers, for your support has been the reason I have continued to try so hard during this difficult period.”

The venue had long hosted musicians in an intimate setting.
