Mount Duneed man charged following horror Winchelsea crash

A man has been charged with a slew of offences including dangerous driving causing death following a horror two-vehicle collision in Winchelsea on Saturday night.

A man has been charged following a horror crash in Winchelsea that left a woman dead.

Police allege a white Volkswagen Passat collided with a green Toyota Avalon on Winchelsea-Deans Marsh Rd just after 10pm on March 9.

The driver of the Toyota, a 55-year-old woman from Deans Marsh, died at the scene, while a female passenger in her 20s suffered upper body injuries and was taken to Geelong hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 31-year-old Mount Duneed man who was behind the wheel of the Volkswagon was charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

Thee man, who was also taken to Geelong hospital in a serious but stable condition on Saturday night, has been remanded to face a magistrate on Tuesday.

Footage from the scene show the front bumper of a white Volkswagen badly damaged.

The stretch of road where the collision occurred was closed into the early hours of Sunday morning but has since reopened.

It’s been a tragic start to the year on roads across the state with 56 lives lost, according to Victoria Police.

The latest fatality comes after a 53-year-old Curlewis truck driver died in a collision on Deans Marsh-Lorne Rd last week.

The man’s truck attempted to overtake a car before crashing into a tree about 2pm on March 5.

Three people in the car were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Residents living near the scene have called for the speed limit to be dropped from 100km/h to 70km/h, saying the stretch of roads was “notoriously dangerous”.
