A new large-scale wind farm north-west of Geelong capable of powering 265,000 homes is in the works, with community information sessions kicking off this week.

Spanish company Acciona is behind the 360MW Tall Tree wind farm project that would be located on private land north of Teesdale and west of Lethbridge, around 35km from Geelong and within the Golden Plains Shire.

Information sessions were held this week in Teesdale, Lethbridge and Meredith.

It is understood Acciona has already locked in landowners who would have the 60 wind turbines on their properties.

The project is unrelated to TagEnergy’s $2bn, 765MW Golden Plains wind farm in Rokewood that recently saw the installation of the first of its 122 turbines.

Attendees to its information sessions were told of the benefits the project would bring to the region, including the distribution of community grants.

“A wind farm project of this size has the potential to generate enough energy to power approximately 265,000 homes, and could create up to 270 jobs during peak construction, as well as up to 10-12 ongoing jobs during operations,” its website states.

“Currently, the proposed project is in the feasibility stage, with wind monitoring and environmental surveys ongoing at the site.”

Acciona’s website states that it will provide detailed information about the project to the state government this year that effectively signals the start of the approvals process.

“This will continue to inform project design throughout the development phase, alongside feedback from the community,” it states.

Construction is anticipated to commence in mid-2026.

A state government spokeswoman confirmed that no planning applications for the project had been lodged.

Acciona is behind a number of other wind farms in Victoria, including at Waubra and Mt Gellibrand.
