A Dodges Ferry diver had a heart-pounding encounter with a rare, majestic sunfish measuring in at over three metres long.
Chris Bakon came across the rare and majestic creature in the waters between Shipstern Bluff and Cape Raoul.
He and a friend were out in their wetsuits cray diving when their first spotted the bizarre creature from a distance.
At first Mr Bakon only saw an enormous fin emerging from the water’s depths and felt his blood chill.
“My mate Alex noticed it, and we were like ‘Geez, what’s that? Is that a bloody shark?” Mr Bakon said.
“It was very intimidating to start with, that initial three to four seconds.”
After getting closer to the shadowy shape they realised it was a sunfish – a rare and strange species that resembles a fish head with two enormous fins protruding from its sides.
Mr Bakon said he’d never expected to encounter one in the wild, let alone catch it on video.
“I was pretty high about it,” he said.
“I reckon it’d have to be at least three metres long, not including its fins. It was about the size of a car.”
