Darwin hobby shop bringing fun for Territorians

‘Not everybody is an outdoorsy person,’ says the manager of Darwin’s ‘uncovered gem’.

Stone Monkey

A plethora of board games, collectables and figurines are just some of the “geeky” items that Stone Monkey offers.

Located in Coconut Grove, the proud hobby shop has been serving Territorians for years, yet for many remains an uncovered gem.

Manager Dave Morgan, 52, said the store was not only a shop, but a gaming space for people to bond and make friends.

“We have guys who will just come in here sometimes, build their models and paint and next thing you know, they’re chatting to other guys,” he said.

“(After that) they come in a few days later to play a game.”

Mr Morgan said Stone Monkey’s customers were diverse.

“You would not believe some of the people that really are nerdy when the truth is known,” he said.

“Not everybody is an outdoorsy person, there’s a lot of people who are not the sort of person that’s going to go camping and fishing, so you’ve got to have something that will cater for them as well.”

As for board games, does the store have ‘Monopoly’?

“There’s actually nearly 200 versions of ‘Monopoly’ – we keep a handful.”

And what are Stone Monkey’s most popular board games? ‘Root’, ‘Catan’ and ‘Ticket to Ride’.

With hundreds of items to explore in store, Mr Morgan said he was confident anyone would be satisfied.

“We try to have something for absolutely everybody,” he said.

The store remains open seven days a week and has late night gaming on Tuesdays and Fridays.
