Two 12-year-old girls are among a group of four youths charged over an alleged armed robbery and assault of a 30-year-old woman at Freshwater on December 24.

A police spokeswoman said the woman was sitting in her parked vehicle on Canopy Close around 1am when the group of teens approached her vehicle and allegedly forcibly removed her from the drivers seat.

One offender allegedly produced a knife and threatened the woman.

It is alleged the teens attempted to start the woman’s car but were unsuccessful, and fled the scene after stealing her handbag, keys, and mobile phone.

The woman was treated at the scene for bruising and swelling.

The dog squad were called in and managed to locate the woman’s handbag, said the spokeswoman.

Following investigations, officers identified and charged a number of children who were allegedly involved.

A 16-year-old Edmonton boy appeared in Cairns Children’s Court last week, charged with armed robbery in company, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle related to other incidents.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Stewart Clyde-Smith opposed bail, describing the alleged incident as “extremely serious”.

“There was significant offending against this person.”

Acting Magistrate Raimund Heggie said the boy was an unacceptable risk for bail and remanded him in custody to appear for mention in the Cairns Children’s Court on January 16.
