A conserve water notice has been issued for residents from North Cairns to Smithfield due to ongoing maintenance at water reservoirs.

Cairns Regional Council issued the notice at 5.25pm on Tuesday, urging residents to conserve water.

“People may notice that their water is discoloured and may have an odour due to ongoing maintenance at water reservoirs, high usage, and hot temperatures,” the statement read.

“To help clear the water supply, users are requested to use water for essential use only.”

A council spokesman confirmed the water quality remained at regulated drinking quality and there was no concern for public health.

“Testing is ongoing and has returned no concerning results,” the spokesman said.

“We are working with our contractors and water testing units to explore every possible option to rectify the issue quickly.”

The conserve water notice is likely to remain in place for up to two weeks.

“We understand this is not the standard our residents should expect, and Council apologises for any inconvenience,” the spokesman said.

Council will advise when further information is available.
