Two hikers were in hospital for monitoring after getting lost for several hours during a bushwalk in a Far North Queensland rainforest.
Emergency services were called in for a search and rescue operation following reports a 67-year old male and a 42-year-old female had gone missing at 3pm on December 30.
Authorities reported the bushwalkers had been at Woopen Creek, an area popular among hikers for several walking tracks, including the Woopen Creek Circuit.
Far North resident Kincaid Lunn captured footage of the rescue efforts after he noticed two helicopters flying overhead for “several hours”.
“Polair (police) and search and rescue helicopters were searching the property at the end of Knust Road until late,” he said.
“They (the hikers) had rung triple-0 after they couldn’t find their way out.”
Queensland Police Service, along with the Rescue 510 helicopter and SES volunteers successfully located the pair about 7.30pm on Monday.
A spokeswoman for QPS said: “Police launched a search and rescue operation following reports of two lost bushwalkers”.
“Both were transported to Cairns Hospital for observation.”
