A person has been rescued after swimming near Kuranda on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency service crews responded to reports of a person stuck on a rock while swimming at Barron Falls on Thursday afternoon around 3.49pm.

Barron Falls is a popular tourist sightseeing spot, 31km north of Cairns.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed the person had been rescued via boat around 5.30pm.

Earlier, a QFD spokesman confirmed a person had been swimming in the middle of the river when they became stranded on a rock.

“Looks like that one is someone’s been swimming on the Barron River and they’re on a rock in the middle of the river,” the spokesman said.

“It looks like they’re safe on the rock, they just need help to get off.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed two crews were on standby.

“There’s no information to suggest the person is injured, just that they require rescuing,” the spokeswoman said.
