Why you can’t watch free to air in Cairns right now and what Telstra is doing to fix it

Telstra has provided an update on the restoration of television transmission to areas around Cairns after an issue with a piece of hardware at the TV tower atop Bellenden Ker.

Telstra has provided an update on the restoration of television transmission to areas around Cairns after heavy rain knocked out a piece of hardware at the TV tower atop Bellenden Ker.

Telstra, which provides the Digital Video Network that delivers free to air content to people’s TVs, said recent heavy rain had affected hardware on the Bellenden Ker transmission tower and it was “affecting some TV channels in some areas south of Cairns”.

“Television stations that have redundancy in place have switched to their backup and we are working to get everyone else’s shows back on their TVs ASAP,” a Telstra spokesman said.

In a social media post, WIN News Cairns said the fault was a hardware failure within the Telstra DVN network.

“We are working with Telstra and have escalated this for immediate restoration, however we are waiting for replacement hardware that is required to be installed,” the post read.

“Further updates will be provided as they are available.”
