A FAVOURITE Far North destination resort has reopened after it temporarily closed its accommodation because of Covid uncertainty and lockdowns.
While day trips to Green Island have been running, the Green Island Resort reopened on Wednesday after an eight-week closure just in time for borders to open on Monday.
Quicksilver Group managing director Tony Baker said they were happy to be able to reopen again.
“We’re delighted to be reopening the resort’s accommodation services in perfect timing for the holiday season and the anticipated reopening of our State border next week,” he said.
The initial decision to shut was due to losing New South Wales and Victoria to border closures.
“There was a continual rolling of cancellation bookings, many of those cancellations came very late which meant the actual number of rooms was not sufficient to sustain the other facilities you need to provide,” he said.
A number of the staff were maintained during the closure but on reduced hours working on the day trips, however Mr Baker said many staff members had to leave. They have since filled up many of those positions and they are still in the process of recruiting.
While the resort was closed Mr Baker said a few improvements were made.
“We have done some improvements out there in some areas, certainly lots of cleaning, tidying up and getting ready,” he said.
But Mr Baker said they are ready to reopen to guests with some difference to the last time they opened.
“Now that we have advice that interstate borders are opening up we are looking for an improvement,” he said.
“We have had solid bookings coming through, so that was nice to give us a nice lead.”
Green Island Resort general manager Sue O’Donnell said there will be some great deals for locals as it opens.
“Our staff are so excited to welcome everybody back again. While our day facilities have been open, it’s wonderful to be reopening the resort just in time for the holidays and festive cheer, and with some great deals for locals too,” she said.
All the usual inclusions will also be up and running.
“In addition to luxurious suites, all guests receive fantastic value with free inclusions of catamaran transfers from Cairns (with Great Adventures), snorkelling, glass bottom boat tours, beach deck chairs and umbrellas, kayaking and complimentary sunset drinks,” she said.
