MORE than 400 runners turned out for the Great Pyramid Race in Gordonvale on Saturday, with two new champions conquering the peak.
Matthew Romano, the full distance champion, celebrated his first race win but was thankful no one was on his tail coming into the finish line.
“I feel stoked to be able to win it. It’s a tough race,” he said.
“Once you get to the top, it’s just as tough getting to the bottom. There’s so many different levels to the race.
“Getting home was probably the hardest. Lucky there was no one close to me because I probably would have crumbled if I had to sprint.”
Mr Romano finished the race with a time of 1 hour and 38 minutes.
Montana McEvoy was the first female across the finish line with a time of 1 hour and 54 minutes.
The winners each took home $1000 in prize money for their massive efforts, thanks to new event sponsor Woolworths Gordonvale.
“We’ve just got amazing sponsorship, which means the event will just keep getting bigger and better,” said event secretary Sarah Campbell.
“Community turnout was great. Over 1000 people came.”
Mr Romano had some succinct advice for next year’s competitors.
“Get training now. Definitely don’t underestimate it,” he said.
