A 64-year-old Cassowary Coast man has died in a horror head-on crash that closed the Bruce Highway in both directions for five hours on Wednesday.
Emergency services attended the scene at the Tully River Bridge about 10am on Wednesday after two utilities collided; the Rescue 510 helicopter also attended.
Forensic Crash Unit senior constable Lee Chamberlain said a man aged in his 60s was declared dead at the scene.
He said the crash involved a Holden Rodeo travelling north and a Toyota LandCruiser travelling south.
Police later confirmed the 64-year-old was driving the Holden Rodeo.
“Investigations are continuing and we are keen for anyone who saw the utilities in the lead up to the crash to give us a call,” he said.
Paramedics transported the 45-year-old male driver and 33-year-old male passenger of the LandCruiser to Tully Hospital in stable conditions.
A QAS spokeswoman said they had minor injuries.
A Police spokesman said both men were from the Townsville area.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services had two vehicles on scene assisting with extricating the patients.
“We were called to a two-vehicle crash on the Tully Bridge around 10am and our crews are working with paramedics to assist the patients,” a QFES spokesman said.
Traffic diversions were in place for most of the afternoon but police declared the highway fully open at 4pm.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
