It only took three years of club cricket for teenage Douglas all-rounder Kai Pendlebury to accomplish something not often seen at the beachside community.
The medium fast bowler looked almost unstoppable against Atherton’s fourth grade side in round five of Cricket Far North, rolling calmly to a ridiculous 7-19 afternoon.
Pendlebury said the feat caught him off guard, but he was proud nonetheless.
“Some of the cricket veterans there that have played for nearly 30 years said they hadn’t seen a seven-for,” he said.
“It was a pretty big accomplishment … for a 19-year-old kid to go and nearly get the whole team out, it’s unheard of.”
Having played cricket in some form or another his whole life, Pendlebury joined up with the Muddies three years ago.
He certainly did a good job of defending his side’s 178-run total against Atherton en route to a 92-run walloping.
“I took one wicket straight up first ball pretty much,” Pendlebury said.
“I thought ‘alright, this is pretty incredible’ – first ball, first wicket, I was pretty chuffed about that to be honest.
“Then I just kept right on the stumps line length every time and [got] a few wickets.
“I caught a bowled a wicket too which was a big achievement and the boys did well in the fill in which helped me get those wickets.”
The bowling machine said the performance was “by far” his best in his young career, with hopes his early success will grow.
“The thing with cricket: you never know what the pitch is going to do so it really helped on my day to get those seven wickets that’s for sure,” he said.
