Bruce Highway reopens after heavy vehicle bridge incident

Both lanes of the Bruce Highway are now open after a crashed truck brought traffic to a crawl on Monday morning.

Both lanes of the Bruce Highway are now open after a crashed truck brought traffic to a crawl on Monday morning.

Earlier a crane and tow truck arrived at the scene of the crash south of Cairns involving a heavy vehicle.

At 6.15am emergency services were called to the Bruce Highway at the Russell River bridge after a blue Volvo prime mover towing a container trailer crashed into a roadside barricade.

One lane of the road is closed and police at the scene are controlling traffic through the accident site.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said a crane and tow truck had arrived at the scene and fuel was leaking from the vehicle.

“The concern is the fuel is leaking into the creek,” he said.

A motorist from the scene said it looked like the truck clipped the cement guard rail which damaged the tires and fuel tank before the truck came to a stop on the bridge.

“There are traffic lights currently, and traffic is moving pretty well,” he said.

Queensland Traffic have advised delays are expected and for motorists to proceed with caution.
