Thousands of Christmas shoppers evacuated after mall food court fire

A fire in a shopping centre food court has forced the evacuation of thousands of Christmas shoppers.

More than 3000 Christmas shopper have been evacuated from a Westfield shopping centre in Western Sydney after a fire broke out.

Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the Penrith Westfield about 1.20pm Sunday after reports of a fire in the shopping centre’s food court.

Shoppers were forced out into the car parks and surrounding streets as firefighters responded and tried to control the blaze.

It was extinguished about 1.50pm, with one person needing smoke inhalation.

The cause it yet to be determined.
