A woman who was left with “life-altering” injuries after she was shot in the back is set to be taken out of sedation as police reveal further details of a man they believe could assist inquiries.
Emergency services were called to an address on Trees Rd in Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast about noon on Wednesday following reports of shots fired.
A 33-year-old woman was found with a gunshot wound to her back, with the Gold Coast Bulletin having identified the woman as Ms Anyos.
Police believe Ms Anyos was helping people move out of the property and was in the passenger seat of a vehicle when she was shot.
Gold Coast Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said Ms Anyos remained in a critical condition on Monday.
“She’s classified as serious but stable; however, the doctors will be looking to bring her out of sedation today which is a really critical stage for her,” Inspector Mooney said during a press conference.
“There’s obviously the opportunity she could go into shock and still pass away from her injuries
“The injuries she sustained are significant and they will be life-altering.”
Inspector Mooney said police would release footage on Monday of a white Hino tow truck police believe left the scene after the shooting.
The car reportedly drove through Tallebudgera for about an hour or two before driving into Nerang.
Inspector Mooney said there was no domestic violence connection between the male driver of the Hino truck and Ms Anyos.
“We believe they travelled to the location together with the victim’s partner; however, we don’t believe there’s too much of a background there,” he said.
“We believe they may have only met that day.”
Mr Mooney said the man could have travelled interstate, but police weren’t sure.
He said police didn’t believe the man was dangerous.
“It could’ve been deliberate but it also could’ve been unintentional,” Inspector Mooney said of the shooting.
He urged anyone who had seen the truck, or who had dashcam footage, to come forward, as the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remained “unclear”.
“We have 10-15 witness statements who all provide varying versions of what’s actually occurred, so we’re still trying to paint the picture and clarify what’s happened to our victim,” he said.
“We still believe there are a number of people we haven’t been able to speak to at this point in time.
“They may not have been there at the time of the shooting, but if they were there at all that day we’d like them to come forward so we can get some details from them.”
Inspector Mooney earlier told reporters the homicide squad had been brought in despite Ms Anyos still fighting for life in hospital.
“It’s going to be a complex investigation, we have engaged the homicide squad at this point in time because the victim’s injuries are critical,” Inspector Mooney said.
“We don’t know at this point in time whether she’ll survive.”
A crime scene remained in place at the Trees Rd property on Thursday.
“Police have not recovered any weapons, and no one is in custody at this time,” a Queensland Police spokeswoman said.
“Investigations are continuing.”
