An investigation has been launched after a passer-by made a grim discovery on a regional highway.

Police are investigating the death of a woman, whose remains were found on a highway in western Victoria.

A passer-by discovered the human remains on the side of the Western Highway in Kiata, in the Wimmera region of Victoria, on April 4 about 8am.

While the deceased person has not yet been identified, police believe it to be a woman.

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed, it is being treated as a possible hit-and-run.

It’s believed the woman may have been hit by a truck of a heavy vehicle sometimes between 9pm Thursday and 2am Friday.

Investigators are asking for anyone traveling in the area around that time with dashcam footage to please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
