A federal Labor MP has announced she is taking leave from parliament after undergoing surgery to remove a large tumour.

A federal MP has announced she is taking extended leave after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour.

Fiona Phillips, the Labor member for the regional NSW seat of Gilmore, said she would be taking leave from parliament.

“Today I was admitted to hospital in Sydney for surgery to remove a large oral tumour,” she said on Facebook on Tuesday.

“Following the surgery I will be taking an extended period of time over the coming weeks to fully recover at home.

“At this stage I do not know whether the tumour is benign or something more sinister, although tests over recent months have been as good as they can be.”

She thanked her health practitioners “for their expertise, dedication and support.”

“I take reassurance from feeling healthy and positive, and having a very supportive loving family,” she said.

Ms Phillips won the seat in southern NSW in 2019 in a tight contest and was returned at the 2022 election.

A number of colleagues, including ministers Clare O’Neil, Linda Burney and Kristy McBain, wished her a speedy recovery.

“Please do one thing for me today and every day, hug your loved ones, support our most vulnerable; reach out and make sure they are okay,” Ms Phillips said.

“I’m looking forward to being back out and about across our beautiful region, in the communities I adore, as soon as I can.”
