A Bowen man indecently dealt with a then-nine year old child for more than two years in what a judge described as an ‘opportunistic and brazen’ series of assaults.

A jury found Anthony Graham Bunn, 38, guilty of ten counts of sexually related offences, including four counts of rape, in the Bowen District Court on March 6.

Bunn was acquitted by the jury of a further six sexually related offences.

The Townsville District Court heard yesterday that it was Bunn’s second trial for the same offences, after Judge Gregory Lynham sentenced him to six years imprisonment in August 2021.

Bunn successfully appealed against the result of his first trial, and a second trial was ordered by the Court of Appeal.

He appeared in the District Court yesterday, again before Judge Lynham.

Crown Prosecutor Shannon Sutherland said Bunn had been found guilty by the jury of a range of sexual offences between November 2016 and May 2019.

The girl was aged just nine years and eight months when Bunn first sexually assaulted her and the unlawful relationship continued until she was 12 years and three months old.

Ms Sutherland said much of the offending took place in the shower at the girl‘s home when her mother was at work or away from the house.

She said the offences included masturbation, oral sex and digital penetration, and Bunn had shown no remorse for his actions.

Judge Lynham said that as a sad by-product the victim no longer had any relationship with her mother.

He sentenced Bunn to five-and-a-half years in prison.
