Family fun is locked in at Magnetic Island for Father’s Day, with the annual Townsville Airport Father’s Day Picnic on Sunday.

Featuring The Great Inflatable races, mud crab races, a sandcastle competition along with food stalls and live entertainment, the event has something for everyone.

As part of SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week, which kicked off on Thursday, Townsville Airport general manager Brendan Cook said the event was an important economic driver for the area, with the airport sponsoring the event for the last nine years.

“Magnetic Island Race Week is more than just a sailing event, it’s a vibrant showcase of Townsville’s tourism potential and provides a significant economic boost to our local tourism operators and businesses,” Mr Cook said.

“The event draws competitors and spectators from across Australia, giving our region a fantastic opportunity to shine on the national stage.”

Mr Cook said the Father’s Day Picnic was a much-loved event for his young family.

“We love the event; it’s always on our calendar. It’s my boy’s third year attending with us. We had some good luck in the past (with races). We are hoping to take another title this year,” he said.

With recent events such as the Multisports World Championships, India Fest and the upcoming Tones and I concerts, Mr Cook said it has been a huge season of events for the city.

“Anything that brings people from the community and broader regions of Townsville, we love the support, and it’s great for good business,” he said.

“The Multisports World Championship was huge. We had four and a half thousand competitors from around the world enjoying Townsville. I met people on The Strand from America and Europe that spoke highly of Townsville.”

SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week injects more than $1.2 million into the Townsville economy, with SeaLink adding more ferries to cater for the larger crowds.

SeaLink North Queensland’s general manager, Darren Spearman, said the company was proud to sponsor the event’s naming rights for its 17-year history.

“The event sold out in 12 minutes. When the majority of the crews have come from Southern colder places like Tassie, why wouldn’t you want to come to North Queensland after the Hamilton Island race,” he said.

“It’s a relaxed, competitive racing environment. It’s a magnificent time of the year, and we have so many events going on at the same time; it’s the place to be, and the whole town is buzzing.”

For Father’s Day, SeaLink is offering a special ferry rate of $34.00 for Adults and $72.00 for Family return passes this Sunday.

The Townsville Airport Father’s Day at Picnic Bay kicks off at 9am with market and food stalls and kids activities.

The Great Inflatable Race starts at 10:30am, with activities running until 5pm.

Free shuttle buses are on offer from Nelly Bay to Picnic Bay from 9am to 5pm.

SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week kicked off on 29 August and runs until 4 September.
