Woolworths rolls out new payment system nationwide

The supermarket giant has just rolled out a groundbreaking new payment system that is designed to make shopping faster.

New Woolies app feature

Woolworths has just rolled out a new checkout feature that it says will make shopping faster – and customers are already loving it.

The supermarket giant has now added a digital wallet into its Everyday Rewards loyalty app, which is designed to help make shopping more efficient.

In a TikTok that has amassed thousands of views, Woolies staffer Liam Kirley, who runs the chain’s page, provided a demo on how the new feature works.

In the clip, he pretends to act as an employee and two separate customers.

“Wow sir, you are looking stunning today. How are you?” Liam the employee says to a ‘customer’.

“Why thank you sir, I must say ditto to you.”

“Stop it sir, you’re making me blush. Is that cash or card today?”

“It will be Everyday Pay.”

“Oh, the new way.”

Liam the ‘customer’ then heads to a self-serve checkout and explains to another ‘customer’ how the digital wallet works.

“I added my bank card to my Everyday app and all I have to do is scan my QR code – my rewards card has added to it and all I have to do is scan and I am then out of here.

“And I collect points and it’s completely safe.”

Apart form his acting, TikTok users were also blown away by the new feature.

“This is awesome,” one person wrote.

“Woolies for life,” another joked.

But some didn’t understand how it made shopping “quicker”.

“I don’t get the hack? It’s not quicker than just scanning rewards card then tapping bank card?” one person wrote, to which another responded: “[It’s] good if you don’t have your bank card, and it also works with gift cards. (It’s significantly quicker for gift cards as you don’t need to swipe and key pin.)”

Liam also added it’s “super handy”.

Woolies says the new system will make shopping faster because customers will no longer have to scan their Everyday Rewards card prior to paying normally.

The new feature has been built by Wpay – the payments arm of Woolworths Group – and is one of the first digital wallets in Australia to support QR code payments.

“We know speed, ease and contactless payment at the checkout is important to our customers as they lead increasingly busy lives,” Everyday managing director Hannah Ross said,

“By integrating the ease of QR code payments with our Everyday Rewards app, we can save customers time at the checkout and help ensure they never miss a rewards point again.”

How it works

Customers download the Everyday Rewards app and then punch in the details of their preferred credit, debit or gift card. Then at the checkout, all customers have to do is scan the QR code presented by the terminal. The app will then automatically deduct the transaction from the nominated account.

Everyday Pay from Everyday Rewards is available in all Woolworths Supermarkets, Woolworths Metro and BIG W nationwide.
