Get your granny panties and bunny tails ready because Bridget Jones is returning to the big screen and bringing some fan favourites with her.

Filming for the fourth instalment begins next week, with Renée Zellweger set to reprise the role of the lovable 'spinster.'

Last time we saw Bridget, she was happily back with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and raising their first child, William.

But her happily ever after is about to be turned on its head, as the upcoming sequel draws inspiration from the 2013 novel Bridget Jones’s Diary: Mad About the Boy.

Bridget, now a 51-year-old widow and mum of two, navigates the highs and lows of modern dating, dealing with the twists introduced by social media and dating apps.

Will Hugh Grant be in Bridget Jones 4?

Hugh Grant will also be making a comeback as hunky on-again, off-again lover Daniel Cleaver. While Emma Thompson - who appeared in the 2016 flick Bridget Jones’s Baby - will also be returning.

The storyline takes a heart-wrenching turn with Darcy's tragic death in an accident, leaving Bridget to grapple with being single again. So, it's unlikely Colin Firth will make an appearance.

There will be some new faces among the cast too, with actor and star of The Lion King Chiwetel Ejiofor joining in with Bridget's next big screen capers.

The White Lotus star Leo Woodall, known for his leading role in Netflix's hit series One Day, has also signed up for the movie.

Rumours about Bridget Jones 4 started back in 2022

In a 2022 interview with Radio Times, author Helen Fielding said, "Yes, I’m working on it, and I really hope it will happen. Every film that gets made is a miracle – it’s really difficult to make films happen and to make them good. But I’d love to see it on the screen."

Fielding’s comment comes nearly a year after The Sun reported that a secret fourth film was preparing for production. In it, Zellweger would reprise her role with a grown-up son in tow.

According to a source who spoke with the outlet, producers believed a “huge market” existed for another film given the franchise's popularity.

"The producers always knew there was a huge market for another sequel when the right story was available, and this feels like the right time to tell it. It will be seven or eight years since the last movie by the time this one hits the big screen, and fans will be desperate to find out what happened. It's a British classic."

When is Bridget Jones 4 set for release?

Mail Online reports that filming for the new movie is set to begin in London.

“Bridget is back and about to take over London. Filming is being mapped out already, and all of the pre-production is in place,” a source told the publication. There was some uncertainty about whether it would get off the ground, but the movie is coming.”

According to reports, the hotly-anticipated rom-com will be released globally on Valentine's Day (February 14) 2025.
