‘Where is it?’: Sydneysider baffled after receiving confusing iced coffee order

She paid HOW MUCH for that?!

Whipped Milo iced coffee

A Sydney woman’s daily coffee ritual took a surprising turn when she came back from a month-long holiday to find her usual cafe had undergone some unwelcome changes.

She said she was left shocked — not only by the size of her drink but also by the inflated price tag.

For over a year, she had gone to the same cafe before work, always ordering a small soy iced mocha.

"There was this barista who knew my order," she tells Kidspot. "I didn’t have to say what it was. I would just show up and it would be ready in less than five minutes."

"They didn't even fill up the cup"

But on Tuesday, after returning from her trip, she had a very different experience. First, she noticed a new barista behind the counter. "I gave him a chance because a coffee is a coffee, right? It can’t be that bad."

But unfortunately, it was. Her coffee took longer to make than usual, something she was willing to brush off. But when it finally arrived, she noticed something wasn’t right.

"It was a different colour, much lighter, less chocolate, and it wasn’t really cold, which is the whole point of an iced coffee. There were a couple of measly pieces of ice floating around."

Worse still, "they didn’t even fill up the cup."

"Talk about a price hike"

The woman, who had ordered a small, found herself holding what she described as an "extra small" iced mocha.

As if the size and quality weren't enough to frustrate her, the price was the final straw. "It cost me six bucks. It used to be $5 just a few months ago. Talk about a price hike," she said.

She took some photos of the takeaway coffee cup against her hand for size reference, and it indeed seems like a miniature version of what most people would expect an iced coffee to look like.

The drink, just over half-filled, doesn’t even reach the lid part of the cup and would barely be over 150mL of liquid once you factor in the space that the ice takes up.

Despite her frustration, she didn’t raise her concerns with the cafe staff but rather made a mental note not to return unless her old barista was there.

"I didn’t have the heart to say anything. I normally don’t mind standing up for myself when it really matters, but I just thought there would be no solution. It felt fruitless making a fuss," she said.
