'What is this?' Parents divided over 'inappropriate' Kmart clothing item

"Why is it in the kids section?" one shopper asked. But, not everyone sees a problem with the design.

The Kmart camping thair that everyone is talking about

Christmas is just over a month away, which means just about every store has their own collections of Christmas decorations, food and clothing.

But, as debates around childrens clothes are rife, it seems Kmart is the next store under fire, with one Christmassy t-shirt leaving parents divided.

“Why is it in the kids section?”

Aussie mum Sims has taken to TikTok to share her find in the Kmart kids section.

“I’m sorry, but what is this and why is it in the kids section?” she said.

“Like, I get it. But what the f*ck?”

In the video, she shows Kmart’s Christmas Sequin T-shirt, which retails for $8.

The t-shirt reads ‘kinda naughty’ - with the word ‘naughty’ in sequins.

“It’s not that deep”

Commenters on the post were quick to point out that the t-shirt has a flip sequin detail, with the other side reading ‘nice-ish!’, and is just referring to the classic Christmas song Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.

“Do the sequins reverse so it says kinda nice ? If so I literally don’t think anything other than the most classic Christmas saying naughty or nice to get presents,” one person said.

“but if you change the sequins it says nice” another stated.

“Because naughty or nice is from one of the most classic Christmas songs?” one commenter said.

“because Santa's making a list and he's checking it twice and he's going to find out who's been naughty or nice” said another.

Was this necessary? As a kids clothing designer myself, I couldve come up with 100s of other ideas to put on a kids tee…. #kidsclothing

Others said that regardless, the word ‘naughty’ being on the shirt wasn’t that big of a deal - particularly with the other issues going around with childrens fashion at the moment.

“These days everyone just thinks of things the wrong way. Obviously it can mean many things. It’s not that deep,” said one commenter.

“there's a lot of hills to die on in relation to kids fashion. this isn't one.” another said.

“Haaaaate it”

Sims was quick to clarify that whilst the word ‘naughty’ itself isn’t inherently bad, she thought it was inappropriate for the demographic of older children that the shirt was being marketed to.

“Personally, I do feel it is that deep - and we need to protect our kids 🥰 these tees were made for 8-14year olds. Toddler age probs could get away with it, but most def not pre or early teens imo x,” she responded to one commenter.

Many agreed with her, stating that the shirt was incredibly inappropriate.

“Omgosh, I thought the same when I walked past it! Haaaaate it.” one said.

“I saw this and I was like wtf” another said.

“😂 Literally wtf! This is not okay” said a third.

Some even had different problems with the shirt, in regards to the sequin feature more generally.

“As a teacher my children will never own these sequin tops. I've had to intervene in so many situations where children are uncomfortable with peers touching them.” said one commenter.
