‘We didn’t have the strength to tell you sooner’: MKR couple shares heartbreak

Just five months after losing their toddler, Poppy Grace, to leukaemia, Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton have suffered another devastating blow.

When My Kitchen Rules couple Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton found out in June that Carly was pregnant, it seemed like a step towards healing their heartbreak.

Just four months before, they’d lost their precious daughter, Poppy Grace, to leukaemia.

Poppy Grace was just 20 months old when she passed away.

She’d been diagnosed at 11 weeks, spending most of her short life battling the devastating cancer.

But the couple, who fell pregnant through IVF, has suffered another blow – Carly had a miscarriage.

“We had started to heal, we did a variety of health scans, we were fit and well, and we felt as if Poppy was guiding us towards growing our family,” they shared on Instagram on Wednesday.

“We were over the moon and felt it was a good sign that we found out [Carly was pregnant] on such a special day [Poppy Grace's birthday],” they said.

But then the 11-week scan came along, and they were told there was no longer a heartbeat.

The couple had been on a health retreat to Thailand, and when they returned, Carly was ready mentally and physically to try IVF again.

The news of the miscarriage has delivered fresh heartbreak.

“At the 11-week scan we failed to find the baby’s heartbeat,” they said.

“Watching the ultrasound machine scanning over Carly’s belly, frantically looking for a heartbeat, was devastating.”

The couple has taken some time to process the loss, and they weren’t sure whether to share the journey with their followers.

“It’s taken a minute to gain the strength to share where we are at,” they said.

“We only ever want to share uplifting news.”

“But we also know the power of our community to lift us up, so we felt compelled to let you guys know.”

Although the miscarriage is a tragic setback, the mums are determined to keep trying for another baby.

“But even though we have had this setback, we will push through and continue to rise up for our precious Poppy Grace.

“We are channelling her resilience in dealing with this new set of challenges and hope she watches on, proud of her mums.

“We hope that one day, our daydream of a family will come true, that Poppy will have siblings and we will feel the unconditional love of children again.

“If this is your story too, we hope that your dream of a family will soon come true also.

“Sending love and appreciation to all of you… always xoxox,”
