‘Violation’: Aussies stunned over price of meat pie at F1
The price of a meat pie at the Las Vegas Grand Prix has sparked fury among many who say the menu item "won't pass the pub test".
The outrageous price of food at Formula 1 events in the US is again making waves.
Scott McLaughlin – an IndyCar driver from New Zealand – took to X over the weekend to respond to an attendee at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The original poster shared a photo of a range of food options at the event, including picks from international locations like the UK, China, and Australia.
But, it is one of the Aussie items in particular that has people up in arms.

“24 bucks for an Aussie meat pie which is 37 bucks [in] Aussie dollars,” McLaughlin shared.
Aussies in the comments were in complete disbelief, calling the act entirely un-Australian.
“Oh my god, my local bakery got shut down for health violations but the pies were only $4.50. $37.00 is an actual violation,” said one person.
“Fark Moi, that won’t pass the pub test,” said another.
“That is absolutely criminal,” someone else weighed in.
“Tell em they’re dreaming!” a fourth shared.
“That doesn’t sound very Australian,” another mused.
One Kiwi even noted that the pie would cost about $NZ42, adding it “better be the diameter of an F1 tire for that price”.
A photo posted to the Australian Meat Pie Society on Facebook shows that the pie contained ground beef and mushrooms, and is served with a frisee, watercress and citrus vinaigrette salad.
The pie was even expensive when compared to other items pictured, with fish and chips also setting you back $US24, and a halal chicken rice bowl coming in at $US22.
However, dedicated F1 fans and American sporting buffs weren’t all too surprised, noting the consistent high prices at events like these.
“Welcome to American sports venues where the food is stupidly overpriced. I hate it so much,” said one commenter.
The prices gave many people flashbacks to last year’s Miami Grand Prix, where the premium prices guests were paying for food and drink at Hard Rock’s Beach Club Deck sent fans spiralling.
The “exclusive club” had trackside viewing, multiple bars, a pool and performances from big names like Ed Sheeran – but would that really make $200 wings worth it?
The Hard Rock chilled “bites” menu included lobster rolls for $US190 ($290), yellowfin tuna poke for $US170 ($260), U5 graded prawns (very large and rare) for $US290 ($440), and a fruit plate with pink pineapple, watermelon, stone fruit, rambutan, kiwi and coconut granita for $US190 ($290).
In the warmed section of the menu, guests could find meals including a coconut chicken and angus garlic beef empanada duo for $US170 ($260), steamed buns with Korean BBQ shiitake and pickled vegetables for $US120 ($180), nachos for $US180 ($280) and a crispy wing board for $US190 ($290).
So, by comparison, maybe $37 for a meat pie isn’t so bad after all.
