The Kmart hack everyone's jumping on this Christmas

It's the perfect way to save money, and get creative this festive season.

DIY Advent calendar —make your own for a fun holiday countdown

Whether you like it or not, Christmas is well and truly around the corner, which means things are going to get very expensive, very quickly.

But, with advent calendars the first thing many are trying to tick off their list, one Kmart trend is making waves, helping parents not only save some money, but also make the little ones feel extra special come December.

‘What an amazing idea!’

This week, Yahoo reported that one Kmart shopper took to Facebook, sharing a photo of the store’s 24-compartment storage box with the idea to turn it into a personalised advent calendar for her kids.

"Has anyone tried turning one of these into an advent calendar? I’m going to give a crack this year for my 10 yo daughter and 12 yo son," the post said.

In turn, the comments were flooded with people sharing their plans to replicate the hack, tailoring the box’s contents to suit their child.

"Love this idea, I'm going to pinch it, I will wrap individual mini toys. Or paper folded with an outing for each day," one said.

"Lego! Buy a Lego set and fill each compartment with pieces. At the end, they get the completed item. But can do lots with the pieces along the way!" said another.

The perfect way to bring in the silly season

Whilst the hack has resurfaced this year ahead of the silly season, it’s hardly a new idea, with American TikTok creator @emilycarriveau sharing how she made it using a tackle box last year.

“It’s 24 compartments, which means this is the perfect box,” she said.

“You guys can fill your advent calendar with whatever you want - hot chocolate pods, nespresso, toys and trinkets, money. The bottom line is, it’s all going to fit!”

In the TikTok, Carriveau folded and numbered pieces of coloured paper to hide the contents of each cube, allowing the recipient to be surprised each day.

Others on Facebook and TikTok have shared similar boxes to create gifts for teachers, or even for their pets.
