Teens under fire for disgusting act at holiday park

“We’ve got kids club, we’ve got movies on, we’ve got all this other stuff to keep them entertained, [but] as soon as we stop doing those things, they’re bored and they have to do something else”

How to camp right in Australia : What you need to know

Heading to a caravan park is often considered the simplest way to holiday. It’s affordable, convenient, and has a host of activities to keep the whole family busy for days on end.

But, while the vast majority of holidaygoers are doing the right thing, there’s one big issue that park managers have had enough of - and it’s kids who are under the pump.

“You name it, it’s been down there!”

There are certain things we’ve all been told not to flush down the toilet. Wet wipes, tampons, excessive toilet paper, the usual!

But, of course, if you do it at home, you’re the one who has to deal with the consequences, so you put a little more thought into it. According to Perry, the Park Manager at Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach, caravan parks have become fair game.

However, it’s not the adults he’s worried about - it’s your kids.

“We’ve got kids club, we’ve got movies on, we’ve got all this other stuff to keep them entertained, [but] as soon as we stop doing those things, they’re bored and they have to do something else,” he told Kidspot.

“We have notices everywhere ‘please flush down the right stuff’ and ‘don’t let your kids be unsupervised at night or during the day’, but they’re on holidays!”

Of course, it all starts out with the obvious stuff.

“The biggest one is the whole toilet roll - they love to do that in every single toilet, flush, and then run. That’ll probably happen six or seven times in an eight-week period in the summer,” he said.

“Then, you’ve got stones. We’ve pebbled around a lot of our buildings with stones… and the lovely kids love to stash them down down the toilets as well.”

But, the items just get more and more bizarre.

“In our games room, we have cuddly bears they can win. They’ll go down. We’ve found a few golf balls, snooker balls - you name it, it’s been down there!” he said.

According to Perry, it’s gotten so bad that he’s had to remove the claw machines from their games room in an effort to stop it from happening.

“It impacts everybody”

Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach is located inside Beowa National Park, on the south coast of New South Wales.

It’s chock full of activities to do onsite, with a waterpark, resort-style pool, and mini-golf. Plus, there’s a beach right on your doorstep.

Feeling relaxed and well and truly in holiday mode, Perry thinks people just don’t realise how much it impacts him and the park when people do the wrong thing.

“A minimum charge for a [plumber] call out is $350 straight away, then you’ve got equipment hire for the pump and the sprayer that has to go down the line to unblock it, you’re looking at $500 to $600, so that’s already $800 a visit just to get down into the pipes to pump them out,” he said.

“If we can’t find the pipe that’s blocked, the camera has to go down there, that’s $400 for the camera. Then, if it’s really blocked and we’re not going to get it done that way… it could be thousands of dollars.”

That is, until they can’t use the toilet before bed.

“It’s not just the cost - this mainly happens after 10pm, which means you’re going to get called out to investigate flooding toilets, you’re trying to get a hold of a plumber at 11pm, you’re having to close amenities blocks,” he said.

“It impacts everybody!”

“Just don’t do it!”

With an uptick in all kinds of nasty behaviour, like graffiti, vandalism, and abuse at parks and hotels globally, Perry hopes he can remind travellers of one thing - don't do it!

“Just don’t do it! Treat this like you would at home,” he said.

“95% of the clientele is beautiful - it’s just that 5%.”
