THE pasta masters at Da Angelo are ready to uncork their newest Battery Point venture — an Italian-style café 25 years in the making.
The idea to expand was something business owners Angelo Fraraccio and Marco Caporelli said they had always considered. When the cafe next door to Da Angelo Italian restaurant became vacant, they jumped at the chance.
Enter Cibo e Vino, a new flavours-of-Rome eatery on Battery Point’s Hampden Rd that will open for breakfast and lunch from Wednesday.
Mr Fraraccio said Cibo e Vino, meaning food and wine in Italian, would fill a void on Hobart’s food scene.
“There are obviously plenty of night-time Italian restaurants but no one has offered Italian food in a daytime style that we’ve created here with Cibo e Vino,” he said.
“We’re trying to create that European-style café that offers traditional foods such as cannelloni, ricotta and arancini as well as sweets and coffee.”
When the new year ticked over to mark 25 years since Da Angelo first opened, it prompted the crew to start thinking bigger, Mr Fraraccio said.
“It’s really a joint venture for Marco and I and Da Angelo’s chefs Roberto Caporelli and Sam Holmes. Da Angelo has been open for a quarter of a century now and we wanted to see it go to another level,” he said.
Mr Fraraccio said about 10 staff would be employed at Cibo e Vino, which would offer indoor and outdoor dining at the former Jam Jar, Chippies and South on Hampden site.
It will be open every weekday except Tuesdays from 7.30am to 4pm, and 8am to 4pm on weekends.
