IT’S the ultimate birthday present and the realisation of more than two years of hard work for local distiller Tyler Clark – the release of his first whisky.
Coinciding with his 29th birthday and also the end of Tasmanian Whisky Week, Mr Clark will be releasing 7K Distillery’s first ever Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky on Saturday.
“I’m not the youngest distiller around, but I’m very proud to be able to say I’ve released my first whisky before turning 30,” the former electrician said.
For the past three years, the boutique distillery has been based in converted shipping containers on Mr Clark’s nan’s property in Brighton.
Now with his nan downsizing and moving into a retirement village and the business moving ahead in leaps and bounds, 7K is now based in Derwent Park with much more space for gin and whisky production.
The still was hand built by Mr Clark himself, which he said should give the whisky a unique profile.
“It’s a light, easy drink – not as oily as some heavier bodied whiskies,” he said.
“The barrels were stored in the shipping containers up until a couple of weeks ago so they’ve been exposed to all sorts of temperature differentials.”
There will be just 150 bottles in the first release available to buy online, with a bigger second release slated for next month.
