A scoop of quality Tasmanian ice-cream certainly holds its own appeal as a mouth-watering dessert. Why not throw in some extra texture with oodles of toppings and decorations to satisfy even the sweetest tooth’s cravings and create a delightfully satisfying sundae.

Local Pizza, 52 Maroni Rd, Berriedale

Recent renovations have seen Local Pizza fitted out with a Brulen soft-serve machine. Each week the head chef comes up with a new sundae creation ($9). They are themed and often reference a current event. Last week’s featured sundae was birthday cake-themed, with cake batter ice cream, sponge cake, sprinkles and pink icing. The soft serve is made from full-cream, organic Tasmanian milk. There is also a vegan sundae option with chocolate sorbeto, raspberry sauce and pistachios.

The Pondering Frog, 16494 Tasman Highway, Bicheno

The fruit-filled sundaes at The Pondering Frog are basic but great value, with big servings and fresh ingredients ($8). The berry sundae can be topped with your choice of Grandma’s raspberry topping, homemade strawberry topping or chocolate topping, and is finished with fresh berries and a wafer. The cherry sundae is made with fruit-filled cherry ice cream, chocolate topping and a fresh cherry on top. All ice cream is made in-store with fresh fruit.

Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, 9 Christmas Hills Rd, Elizabeth Town

This popular sundae has been a firm favourite among visitors to the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm since about 1985. It is fruity, fresh and served all year round. The double-cream homemade raspberry ice cream is gluten-free. A tart, housemade raspberry sauce is poured over the top and contrasts well with the sweet ice cream. The dish is completed with a wafer and raspberry perched on top. The berries are freshest through summer and autumn. The children’s mini option is $8, the small is $10, and the regular is $15.

Mures Tasmania Lower Deck, Victoria Dock, Franklin Wharf, Hobart

The only challenge is choosing when you are craving a sundae from Mures. The crowd favourite from the adult-sized menu is the Nutty Fudge Sundae. It is made with macadamia ice cream, Tasmanian-made chocolate or caramel fudge sauce, whipped cream, crushed nuts and a wafer or two. Other options include the Banana Split, Rocky Road and Choc Royale. The Kids’ Menu features the Traditional Sprinkler, The Malteser and the Flaky ($6.90).

Charlie’s Dessert House Launceston, 74 Charles St, Launceston

On the menu since Charlie’s Dessert House opened its doors is The Original Cookie Sundae. Sitting on a delicious caramelised cookie base made with browned butter is a large scoop of chocolate gelato drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. There is a rotating menu of Cookie Sundae’s at Charlie’s ($14-16). One of the favourites so far has been the Caramello Koala. It has a white chocolate chip cookie base, salted caramel gelato, caramelised popcorn, fudge sauce and a Caramello Koala on top.
