LANDSCAPE photographer Matt Palmer has been named overall winner at the 2019 AIPP Epson Tasmanian Professional Photography Awards.
The Australian Institute of Professional Photography is Australia’s peak representative body for photography in Australia.
The prestigious awards are run at both state and national level annually, with Tasmanian entrants judged as part of the Victorian awards.
And despite having just one-fifth of the entries of Victoria, Tasmanian photographers took out 11 of the 24 gold awards.
Hobart-based photographer Matt Palmer, who was also named the Tasmanian Landscape Photographer of the Year, said he felt humbled to have his work so highly celebrated.
“The quality of work in Tasmania is so strong and it wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that despite our small numbers, Tasmania is home to some of Australia’s best photographers,” he said.
Mr Palmer has been named Queensland Documentary Photographer of the Year three times and Australian Sports Photographer of the Year in 2014. He moved to Tasmania almost two years ago.
He has recently been working on a photography project documenting the state’s fire damaged areas.
