Shoppers warned as simple mistake could have you stopped at the door

Thankfully, the solution is just one click of a button.

She opened the lime bottle and found this...

I don’t know about you, but I don’t get a receipt for everything I buy.

Unless I’m planning to claim it on tax, return it, or it’s a gift, my answer to ‘Do you need a receipt?’ just depends on vibes.

But, after this person’s experience, I might be saying yes more often.

“I’d like to know if I was in the wrong”

A Victorian man has taken to Reddit after a ‘frustrating interaction' at his local Coles.

The man said he headed into the store after a stop in at ALDI, and was met with hostility from a staff member.

“I had a trolley full of items I had bought at Aldi, and popped into Coles for a few bits,” he wrote.

“The lady at the self checkout pointed at the 30 pack of coke cans and demanded to see a receipt to prove I didn't steal it. I said I didn't have one, I never keep receipts unless it's for an expensive purchase that I may need to refund/exchange.”

However, this became quite the problem for the Melbourne shopper.

“She continued insisting that I had to keep my receipts from other stores so that I could prove I hadn't stolen," he said.

“She eventually dropped it after I requested to see which law requires me to prove I didn't steal.

“I can't find their stores' condition of entry online either which doesn't help.”

Ultimately, the man took to the comments, asking if any of this was normal.

“Yes I may be getting old and grumpy, but this annoyed me and I'd like to know if I was in the wrong,” he asked.

“This happened to me…”

Commenters on the post weren’t able to make a call with certainty, however many recounted similar experiences at different stores.

“This happened to me and my fiance at Target. She accidentally hit the ‘No receipt’ button at self-checkout. When we went to leave, the lady standing next to the exit asked us for a receipt. This lady also watched us scan all our items and watched us put physical notes into the machine to pay. We were the only customers going through the checkout. She made a huge fuss about how we can not leave the store with the items unless we have proof of purchase,” said one commenter.

“For what it's worth, many years back I had something similar happen to me. Except it was a bag of Aldi brand nappies,” said another.

Note to self: get a receipt!

Many said that regardless of the specifics, they’d be bringing a receipt anyway - just in case.

“If you walk into a store with an item that you know is pretty likely the store sells you just purchased somewhere else without a receipt I think you can expect the staff to question you about it,” said one commenter.

“Rationally, if you want to walk a trolley of groceries into Coles, bring the receipt. Or enter via the customer service desk to say 'I got this at Aldi' so they can eyeball the cube of Coke,” said another.

“I often will shop at Woolies, Coles and Aldi in a single shop (live near a Westfields with all 3). I’ll ensure I get a receipt from each place as I know I could be accused of theft if I take a 24 pack of cokes half price from Coles, and take it in to Woolies,” a third agreed.
