'Robbery': Aussies divided over the price of a bacon and egg roll

“This is a crime scene,” said one person on social media. But, is it really that crazy?

It’s no surprise to most Aussies that cafe food is getting more and more expensive.

But, whether you’re in a rush or on a budget, the reliable option will always be the bacon and egg roll.

Sure, you could probably make it yourself at home. But, nothing quite hits the spot like delicious bacon, an oozing egg, and barbeque sauce to top it off.

Well, unless it costs as much as this one does.

“World record”

A Sydney local has taken to social media to expose a cafe for their obscene prices - specifically when it comes to their bacon and egg roll.

“World record bacon & egg,” they said.

Atop the menu, a bacon and egg roll is listed as costing a whopping $17.50. For that much, you could quite literally buy the bacon, eggs, and rolls yourself.

The poster specified that the cafe was inside a national park, which appears to be Lane Cove National Park.

“Robbery!”

Commenters on the post were just as horrified by the price, calling it a ‘robbery’.

“Prices are outrageous but you also just know the quality would be totally awful too,” said one person.

“Robbery,” another said simply.

“This is a crime scene,” said a third.

Others called out other menu items, which include a ham and cheese croissant for $16.50, and a large box of chips for $20.

“Small hot chips $12 WTF?” one commenter said.

“That ham & cheese croissant is also going rogue,” said another.

“10 dollars for toast?? That's almost the price of the loaf of bread,” said a third.

“Running a cafe isn’t cheap”

Some, however, were quick to defend the cafe, saying that the prices must have simply been a reflection of their costs.

“Obviously people are willing to pay that! If people stopped paying that amount, then prices would come down quick smart,” a commenter suggested.

“Depending on location, I could just imagine overheads like rent being absolutely exorbitant. If these places continue to exist, all it tells me is that enough people are okay with paying those prices and the location must be quite nice (and expensive),” said another.

“Exactly. Running a cafe isn’t cheap and margins are tiny,” another said, backing up the venue.

A few even called the poster’s bluff, calling out other venues with similar prices and inferring that, unfortunately, this is just the going rate of a bacon and egg roll.

“I got charged $17 for a B&ER at Pork Hub in Alexandria like 3 years ago,” said one commenter about the now-closed venue.

“Egg and bacon roll at Cafe Cressida’s Woollahra $21,” another pointed out.

“Slingtown [Espresso] on Beaumont St, Newcastle charge $23 for a bacon egg roll,” said a third. As of last month, the price is $24 - though it does include a hash brown.
