Popular wedding act that ends with a ‘guaranteed divorce’

A video of a common wedding act has left millions horrified – and exposed a tradition proven to end in a “guaranteed divorce”.

A popular new trend sees brides hiring 'content creators' for their special day

A video of a groom pulling a cruel prank on his new bride has not only left millions horrified, but also exposed the wedding day tradition proven to end in “guaranteed divorce”.

In the viral clip, the unidentified newlyweds were seen cutting into a purple wedding cake, a beloved formality that symbolises the first act a couple do together.

But after the new Mr and Mrs slice into the cake, the overzealous groom then grabs his new wife’s face and smashes it into the sponge.

The woman appears visibly horrified as the top of her head is completely covered in the colourful frosting.

After holding her hand over her mouth in disbelief, her new husband can be seen laughing hysterically and even pumps up his arms in celebration.

He even then holds his hands up in the air for his wife to high-five him, a gesture she appears to return reluctantly.

The video was initially posted last year but has since gone viral again, namely due to the fact it has angered many, with comments from furious social media users pointing out the “humiliating” act often leads to divorce.

“And they lived happily and ever after …” the sarcastic caption on the video, which has clocked up 20 million views since it was shared on X last week, read.

“Automatic annulment,” replied one.

“Nothing says ‘forever’ like tearing down your partner on day one. Solid beginning,” mused another.

As one asked: “What kind of man humiliates his wife on their wedding day, and then forces her to high-five him afterwards?”

“This is absolutely a red flag,” declared one bloke.

“Why does this tradition even exist? It’s a waste of food — and also, humiliating another is never fun,” one noted.

“The only thing this guarantees, is a quick divorce,” remarked another.

“I’m pretty sure there’s evidence that shows this is the biggest sign at a wedding that the marriage won’t last,” speculated someone else.

Approximately 40 per cent of marriages can be expected to end in divorce, according to the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

There is no research specifically linking the act of smashing cake into each other’s faces at weddings to a higher divorce rate, but anecdotally, many believe it’s a telltale sign things won’t work out.

A social media poll from Inside Edition in 2023 showed that a staggering 85 per cent of people think the cake to the face is a terrible idea on your wedding day, with many believing because it demonstrates “disrespect”.

Some also pointed out the bride would have spent hours in hair and make-up before walking down the aisle – a task which is also not cheap.

Others however think it’s just “harmless fun”, stating that the cake cutting tradition was an evolution on a custom that originated in Ancient Rome, according to Brides.com.

“After tying the knot, brides would have barley cake crumbled over their heads, which signified male dominance and the promise of fertility,” an expert told the publication.

“During that time, brides in Yorkshire would also participate, but they took matters into their own hands: After tasting a piece of the cake, they would throw the rest of the slice over their heads as a way to kick off married life without the temptation of desire.

“Then, in medieval England, newlyweds would share their first kiss over a pile of buns to guarantee a wealthy future.”
