Perth mum gives birth to twins seven weeks early by herself on bathroom floor

“Grit your teeth and breathe quickly through your mouth,” the paramedic told Amy as she went through labour alone.

Mum freebirths twins at home

A Perth mother has given birth to twins on the bathroom floor after she went into labour seven weeks earlier than expected.

It was February when Amy was at her home in Morely, Perth with her three children.

Heavily pregnant, she was still seven weeks away from her intended due date. But as she went about her business during the day, he began feeling something unusual.

Not expecting to welcome her twins for nearly another two months, she was thunderstruck when she realised she was experiencing contractions.

Mum gives birth to twins alone on bathroom floor

An agonising 45 minutes after feeling her first contractions, Amy’s pains started to escalate.

Soon, she found herself on the floor of her bathroom and called triple-0.

“I’m in labour,” she breathlessly told the operator, per 7News

On the other line was Keta, a St John ambulance paramedic who kept the expecting mum calm.

“Stay on the line with me,” she instructed.

Amy told the operator she was on her “hands and knees” while her three kids were at home.

“Grit your teeth and breathe quickly through your mouth,” Keta told the woman, who explained the ambulance was on its way to the Morley home.

But it was too late.

“Oh, he’s gone, he’s gone; he’s out,” Amy said, safely delivering the first child on her own.

The ambulance arrived at the Perth home 10 minutes later, Amy still on the bathroom floor as she waited to deliver her second child.

Speaking to 7News, Keta explained that Amy’s demeanour was surprisingly composed while actively giving birth in her bathroom.

“She was very calm for a mum who told me she has three young children under six at home by herself,” she said.

“She was one of the most calm and compliant callers giving birth I have ever spoken to.”

The second baby was born shortly after the ambulance arrived, paramedic Cassandra recalled.

“She said I can feel the second one coming and ... there was very much a baby coming so [we] just helped her deliver that one,” she said.

The entire ordeal was “very surreal”, Amy said, who was taken to King Edward Memorial Hospital after delivering the twins.

The babies were taken to intensive care, where they spent over a month recovering.

Last week, they were finally well enough to be discharged, and sent home to finally meet their family.

As for Amy, she couldn’t thank the paramedics enough for their tireless efforts.

“They were all amazing, I don’t know if I could’ve done it without them,” she said.
