'I’m definitely a 1/10': The viral video parents need to show their kids

Finally, the young woman ‘rates’ herself a 10/10 by showing viewers that there’s a lot more to your worth than meets the eye. Please note: sensitive topics

Self-worth 101: A woman's positive reminder to us all

Thanks to today's online world, young women and all teens are becoming increasingly hard on how they see their bodies.

They're expected to aspire to impossible, usually photo-shopped, standards. The messaging is strong, and for so many, it can lead to eating disorders and other medical issues.

This is why one influencer's recent TikTok about herself is an absolute game-changer - and something every parent needs to see.

It's so powerful, it could change or even save, lives.

And it will help every parent frame any conversation about health and self esteem with their kids.

"I'm definitely a 1/10"

In the clip, the woman, Emily, begins by harshly rating herself, saying, “I’m definitely a 1/10 because I’m bigger than I want to be.”

She looks into the camera sadly as she poses in the mirror and rates her appearance and worth through the lens of how society often views people.

It’s a jarring comment, but the story doesn’t end there.

She pauses, and then the next photo comes up, and instead of continuing to tear herself down, she shifts her focus to something much more meaningful.

Emily lists nine other things she loves about herself: her pretty eyes, her long brown hair, her smile, her stylish fashion sense, her intelligence, her fun personality, being a great sister, her sense of adventure, and, deep down, her sense of self-love.

In the end, she ‘rates’ herself a 10/10, because she realises there’s a lot more to your worth than what meets the eye.

"An amazing way to reframe how we see ourselves"

The video struck a chord with viewers, who commented to thank Emily for sharing the message.

“Such a positive message,” cheered one user.

“I hope this becomes a trend,” another wrote. "This is beautiful and so are you."

“Saving this for myself and my clients,” said a therapist, “because this is such an amazing way to reframe how we see ourselves.”

And it yet another example of the positive feedback, this viewer expressed gratitude: “Thank you for showing me how to love myself better."

"I was weighed at school and it destroyed me"

In a story for Kidspot last month, a Gen X woman opened up about the way she was taught to see her body.

She starts:

"Does my butt look big in this?"

When I was growing up as Gen Xer, that was such a common thing for girls and women to ask about what they're wearing.

It sounds like a joke in 2024, but it's taken me more than three decades to stop wondering that when I look in the mirror.

I used to think, that's just how I was raised. But now I realise it's what I was taught.

And it started with being weighed at school.
