'I ran to the dam, but we couldn't find him'

A heartbroken mother has remembered her two-year-old son as a “cheeky, mischievous and adventurous” boy after he tragically drowned.
Karin Huddle’s son Luka went missing from his home in Lara, near Geelong, about 5.30pm on Tuesday evening, and his body was later found in the waters of a nearby dam.
9News reports emergency services attempted to revive the two-year-old boy, but he tragically died at the scene with his distraught mum nearby.

Karin told 9News she was “numb” with grief after the accident.

"We couldn't find him"
Luka had been playing outside while she was feeding her horses in the moments before he disappeared.
Karin believes Luka had wandered off with his dog Poppy, and when Poppy came back to the property wet, she ran to the dam.
"Poppy was wet. That's what alerted me," Huddle said.
"I ran to the dam and we couldn't find him. We had police help."

"He knows there's something not right"
Karin said she was in “shock” and believed her son could have fallen into the dam.
“He loved swimming and wasn’t afraid of water,” she told 9News. “He was so water safe.
“He would have never gone into the water by himself.”
Karin spoke to the media on Wednesday morning supported by her mum and her two horses, including Finley who she described as “Luka’s pride and joy”.
“Finley loves Luka, and it’s going to hurt him,” she said.
“He knows there’s something not right.”

"I don't have a lot of words for how I feel"
Tragically, Kartin believes her son would still be alive if there was better fencing around waterways in her region.
“The fence is so poor,” she said.
“Fencing in this area is disgusting … it’s atrocious.”
Karin told 9News Luka had an “infectious smile”.
“He was cheeky, mischievous and adventurous,” she said.
“He had the biggest smile on his face every morning.
“I don’t have a lot of words for how I feel, but I’m very angry at the fences and at myself.”
