A neighbour gave my son a toy in the park, then she told me something revolting

“Girl, I would be making a passive-aggressive post on our neighbourhood Facebook page.”

Want to avoid the winter lurgy?

A mum has blasted her neighbour for willingly interacting with others while battling an infectious illness.

Kady, a stay-at-home mum from Florida, was visiting the local park with her friend and son, Cason; it’s exclusive to those who live in the neighbourhood and requires a key to enter.

So, when another mum approached her for a chat, Kady assumed she’d have to make some small talk. Instead, she found herself feeling sick, literally.

Parenting Dilemmas: When a mum brings sick kids to public places

Neighbour says mum and son “should wash their hands after being around her”

“She starts talking to me and my friend and whatever, just making small talk,” she explained.

The neighbour was holding a toy that had a “duck on top with bubbles”, and Kady’s son was immediately interested in playing with it.

“And my son's obviously like, ‘Oh, duck, duck, bubble.’ So she hands it to him. Super nice,” she said in the clip

Kady, who is currently 35 weeks pregnant with her second child, also explained that sharing toys in the playground wasn’t an uncommon sight.

“Again, this is a neighbourhood park that you have to have a key to get into,” she said. “It's very common for kids to share toys, scooters, etc.”

Cason then grabbed the toy and started playing with it, and as Kady watched her toddler enjoy himself in the park, the neighbour kept chatting to Kady’s friend as she was “loading the stroller up”.

“She proceeds to tell us her whole family just had Norovirus,” Kady recalled. “Her husband is still at home sick with it.”

Gastro is highly contagious and has some pretty brutal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and a fever.

It’s usually spread from person to person. However, it can also survive in water, food and on surfaces, meaning if the neighbour’s sick husband or kids touched the duck toy, they’d be spreading their grimy germs all over the place.

But the neighbour was one step ahead, telling Kady she “probably should wash our hands after being around her and be on alert for the next 24 hours.”

Oh, gee, thanks. Bleurgh.

Kady then clarified that she knows there’s always a risk of getting sick when you go out in public, and sometimes, running into someone who has a virus is unavoidable.

“I understand taking your child anywhere in a car, Target, a library, there’s a chance that they’re gonna get sick,” she said.

“But how do you knowingly come [to the park] basically sick with the stomach flu?”

It’s important to remind everyone that Kady is 35 weeks pregnant, and the thought of catching gastro at the tail-end of her pregnancy sounds like hell.

Plus, Kady suffered three bouts of food poisoning over the last eight months, so getting gastro would just be a kick in the teeth.

“Obviously, I'm way more worried about Cason getting it because we haven't dealt with that yet,” she said, adding that if she and her son were to get sick, she’d “lose my ever-loving mind.”

“Why are people so careless?”

The video quickly went viral, with parents supporting Kady and assuring her she wasn’t overreacting with her anger.

“That’s incredibly inconsiderate, I’m so sorry!” someone said. “I’d be so mad,” another agreed.

“I’d be LIVID,” wrote a third. “Why are people so careless? You’re totally not overreacting.”

“That is so irresponsible of her,” a person added. “In my opinion, she should have waited until EVERYONE in her house was well…and then still wait a few days.”

“If my kids are even still coughing, I don’t take them to the park,” a parent agreed.

“Especially being pregnant,” a person replied. “But also why would this mum come to a park if she knows she’s likely contagious?”

Some suggested ways to call the neighbour out.

“Girl I would be making a passive-aggressive post on our neighbourhood Facebook page,” someone said.

“I’d make a sign, laminate it and put it on the park entrance,” another advised. “If anyone in your household has been sick, no entry until everyone is symptom-free for 24hrs.”
