“If I had kids they’d be about to learn the truth about the Easter bunny," the person snapped.

It was inevitable. Easter goodies have officially hit Aussie stores and shoppers have been left stunned by some of the prices of our favourite go-tos. I mean, did you expect anything less given the rising cost of other supermarket items lately?

Sure, while the price of chocolate eggs has been on the rise with different gourmet options available and larger-than-large gift packs on offer, shoppers were kind of hoping - actually banking on - the humble Cadbury bunny this year.

But with the price tag set at $10, maybe not!

Shoppers are shocked at the price of the Cadbury bunny

Aussies are fuming after a shopper took to X to share a snap of the Cadbury Dairy Milk bunny on a supermarket shelf. "Only for easter - $10" the sign read.

“If I had kids they’d be about to learn the truth about the Easter bunny …$10 is outrageous," the poster captioned the shot.

Outrageous indeed! People could not believe their eyes declaring that inflation was "officially out of control" with prices like this for a humble chocolate bunny.

"Not outrageous, that's theft!"

Shoppers were so shocked by the price hike, they even started to do maths to prove just how ridiculous it was.

“I just noticed shopping today the price is now [per] 100g and not kg. These are 40 bucks a kilo!” one person pointed out.

“$40 per kilo! Not just outrageous, that’s theft," another insisted.

And another chimed in: "The 150g variety was $4.50 in 2019 and is now $7."

Wait for the price drop

Obviously we can't cancel Easter for our little ones, so some savvy bargain hunters offered a few pointers to get around the inflated cost of Easter goodies.

“They always go on sale. Just got to be patient and hopefully have a big enough/second fridge to stash it,” one person shared.

According to news.com.au, the reason for the price hike is because the cost of cocoa rose by 44 per cent in the past 12 months and surged to it's highest level in 44 years back in November.

"According to experts, rising global demand is driving the spike, as is the El Nino weather phenomenon in major cacao-growing countries like West Africa, where much of the world’s cocoa crop is produced," the publication wrote.

Meanwhile, according to a Cadbury spokesperson, the price of the bunny that has people up in arms hasn't actually changed since 2023.

“Cadbury has been at the heart of Easter for over 100 years delivering the highest quality and great tasting Cadbury chocolate,” the Cadbury spokesperson said.

“The shape, size and pricing of our Cadbury Dairy Milk range vary depending on the eat experience and product type. Cadbury can confirm our 250g bunny referenced in the X post has remained the same price since last year ($10).”

Woolworths currently has the chocolate on sale at $8 while Coles has reduced it to $7. But the question is: for how long?
