Despite Tasmania’s small size, our island state produces an oversized share of Australia’s finest wine – from the Tamar’s sparkling winemakers to the East Coast’s scenic vineyards.
So when the duo behind one of South Australia’s best cellar doors took over Tassie vineyard Tolpuddle, located at Richmond, in 2011, wine buffs took notice. Cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith (of Adelaide Hills’ Shaw + Smith) – with the help of winemaker Adam Wadewitz – have propelled Tolpuddle’s chardonnay and pinot noir to cult status. A brand new tasting room opened at Tolpuddle in December, giving wine enthusiasts yet another reason to visit the already-popular Coal River Valley wine region.
Visitors can book a tasting session from Friday to Monday, between 11am-5pm, and taste a flight of four wines. Guests can also choose from a concise menu of small share plates featuring local ingredients such as Tongola Curdy Goats Cheese with Hazelbrae Hazelnuts and Kunzea Honey; or Baked Tasmanian Scallops with Lemon and Garlic Butter and Brioche Crumbs.
Designed by Hobart-based Tanner Architects and constructed by local builder Cordwell Built, the tasting room sits discreetly within the vineyard, with large floor to ceiling windows providing views over the vines.
Salvaged timber from Tasmania’s West Coast features strongly throughout and there is seating inside and out.
