A mother has been left with serious burns to her upper body after a gas explosion at a fish and chips shop moments after she turned on the deep fryer.

A mother has been left with serious burns to her upper body after a gas explosion at a fish and chips shop.

Sheena Childs, who was employed at the Kangaroo Island, South Australia, business was lighting a deep fryer moments before it exploded on Saturday afternoon around 5pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to discover a small fire had started inside the shop and the front windows had been blown out.

It took up to 25 firefighters to put the blaze out as it threatened a nearby hostel.

Ms Childs was left with serious burns to her hands and face, 7News reported.

She was treated at the scene before she was flown to Adelaide for further treatment.

It is unclear what caused the explosion however it is being treated as an industrial accident, the ABC reported.

Repairs are estimated to cost in the tens of thousands with Michael Pengilly, the mayor of Kangaroo Island, likening the aftermath to a war zone.

“Initial estimates have placed the damage bill at $40,000 however that figure could rise once Fire Investigators attend the property and also determine the exact cause of the blast,” a spokesperson from the Country Fire Service said.

The owner of the business reportedly told 7News that he was devastated and would do anything in his power to support Ms Childs and her family at this time.

Mr Pengilly, who wished Ms Childs a speedy recovery, said: “The family are highly regarded in the community.”

Concerned Australians have expressed their concern for Ms Childs and her family, with many wishing the mother a fast recovery.

“Hope she will be OK and that she makes a speedy recovery,” one person commented.

Another added: “I hope she’s okay praying for her hope she recovers quickly.”

One said; “Poor woman” while another offered the advice of “staying strong and positive”.
