McDonald's customers notice a huge change to MyMacca's Rewards

"They must have changed it overnight - that's a joke!"

Mum admits to getting Maccas 4 nights in a row as it's 'easier' for toddler

When it comes to Macca’s, everyone has their usual order. And, if you’re getting it frequently, chances are you know how much it costs, whether that’s in-store, or in points via the app - and you’d be alarmed if the worker in the drive-thru told you something different.

Something just like this happened to one Aussie, and it turns out it’s indicative of a much larger change.

“Not sure if it’s been around for a while…”

An Aussie Macca’s customer has taken to the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook group after spotting a more-than-slight difference in the number of points to redeem an item at the restaurant, via the MyMacca’s app.

“McDonald’s has increased the points to redeem. Not sure if it’s been around for a while but I swear it was only 2500 points to redeem a small coffee last week 😂” the woman said in her post.

In the accompanying images, you can see items like a Hamburger, Small Soft Drink, Small Sundae, and a Small McCafe Beverage all listed at 3000 points to redeem. A Medium McCafe Beverage is 4000 points, and things like a McFlurry, Large Fries, and a Cheeseburger will all set you back 5500 points.

If using the app, customers earn 100 rewards points per dollar spent at McDonald’s.

“Changed overnight!”

The post was met with an overwhelming response from fellow Macca’s customers, saying they’d noticed the change too.

“Deffo raised them and only recent. A medium McCafé bev was 3000 and a small was 2500 only last week,” said one commenter.

“Large fries were only 5000 points not long ago,” said another.

“They must have changed it over night as I got a medium coffee yesterday for 3000,” a third agreed.

“Yeah, I noticed that this morning. My small coffee was 3000 points.” another sympathised.

Some even said they’d noticed another potential difference, being that you could only redeem one product in each transaction.

“Hamburgers were 2500 and now 3000. Its also stopping me from redeeming more than one time per transaction,” one commenter said.

And, needless to say, people were fuming.

“Grrr. this is frustrating,” said one commenter.

“This has annoyed me soooo much,” another agreed.

“That’s a joke,” said another person.

“They should warn people so we can use them prior,” a fourth suggested.

“We’ve made some changes…”

In a statement to Kidspot, McDonald’s was able to confirm that changes have been made to their rewards schemes.

Some of these changes were positive, including to their bonus points campaigns.

“Delivering great value to our customers has always been core to McDonald’s, and we know that our loyal Macca’s customers love to be rewarded. In fact, since launching MyMacca’s Rewards in 2022, more than 14 million customers have unlocked incredible rewards and savings,” the McDonald’s spokesperson said.

“To ensure we can continue to provide incredible value and rewards, we’ve made some changes. We’re ramping up our MyMacca’s Rewards bonus points campaigns, meaning MyMacca’s Rewards customers will get even more value by boosting their points with bonuses. Right now, you can get 400 bonus points on a medium coffee purchase, or a whopping 500 bonus points on limited time menu items like our summer McOz burger range.”

However, the changes first noticed by customers - like the changes to rewards tiers and the number of items able to be redeemed per transaction - were proven to be true.

“As part of these changes, we have also made some changes to our reward tiers. While customers will still earn 100 reward points per dollar spent, from January 29, customers will need to earn:

  • 3,000pts to unlock McDonaldland Cookies, a Small Soft Drink, a Hamburger, Apple Slices, a Small McCafe Beverage, or a Small Sundae
  • 4,000pts to redeem a Medium McCafe Beverage
  • 5,500pts to access a free Large McCafe Beverage, a McMuffin, Large Fries, a McFlurry, a Cheeseburger, or a Chicken Snack Wrap
  • 8,000pts for a Big Mac, a McChicken, a Quarter Pounder, or a Filet-O-Fish, and
  • 10,500pts to earn a McSpicy, a Big Brekkie Burger, a McCrispy, or a Classic Angus.

“Additionally, only one reward will be able to be redeemed per transaction.

“MyMacca’s Rewards customers can also unlock awesome bonus Birthday Rewards and weekly discounted food and drinks via our Deals."

However, with the launch of a new Loose Change Menu and the McSmart Meal, there’s no doubt they’re still committed to value.

“Macca’s is committed to ensuring our customers can access exceptional value every day, whether that is through our MyMacca’s Rewards, or menu favourites like our Loose Change Menu featuring incredible deals like our legendary 50c Soft Serve Cone or $2 Hamburger, and the new McSmart Meal,” the spokesperson said.

“Our McSmart Meal offers great taste and value every single day of the week for the unbeatable price of just $6.95. The McSmart includes all your favourite Macca’s menu items, including a Cheeseburger, Small Fries and a Small Soft Drink, PLUS a fourth item of your choice - so whether you love a Regular Sundae, a Chicken n Cheese, crave a 3pc Chicken McNuggets or a second Cheeseburger, the choice is over to you.”
