'I’ve panic ordered air': Melbourne local bamboozled by odd restaurant menu

"Minimalist menu, mistake, or millennial confusion??"

These days, restaurant menus aren’t always as straightforward as you’d like them to be.

If you’re eating at a fancy restaurant, chances are you’ll be met with a list of miscellaneous ingredients rather than the name of an actual meal. Or, at a themed restaurant, you’ll have to read out the most insane sentence you’ve ever seen just for an average cheeseburger.

One Melbourne local has found that at some, it may get even more barebones than that.

“Minimalist menu, mistake, or millennial confusion??”

Melbourne TikTok user @randombutclassy.x has taken to the app to share a… unique menu she came across at an unnamed local venue.

“POV: the menu’s just vibes, I’m not cool enough for this, and now I’ve panic ordered air,” she wrote.

In the video, there are no actual menu items listed, just pages filled with singular scribbled words like ‘wine’ and ‘food’.

“Minimalist menu, mistake, or millennial confusion?? Pls advise,” she asked viewers.

“What was the thought process behind this”

Commenters on the post were just as confused as she was, asking how this kind of menu got across the line.

“What was the thought process behind this,” one commenter said plainly.

“As someone who always needs to check the menu prior to going because I stress out about ordering - this would send me in a spiral,” said another.

“I would have just said we will have one of everything and then say back and waited,” a third said.

“Everybody so creative,” another joked.

There was a reason!

But, others suggested there may have been a real reason for it - and it’s not what you would expect.

“Hahah surely you got the mock up menu that they had made prior to getting them printed. Rare that it’s just on a table to view though haha,” one person joked.

“As someone who does menus for a restaurant, this happens… every now and again a mock up or proof sneaks in somehow,” another said.

And as it turned out, the poster confirmed that this was the case - though it took a little while to come to that conclusion.

“It was so wild, [the waiter] literally came out and handed us the menu and said I’ll leave you guys to look at the menu and then I’ll come back to take your order,” the poster added in the comments.
