I watched Magic Mike on a plane, then the lady next to me handed me a note

"She was glancing over at my screen the whole time, then she tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a piece of paper," Sydney woman, Jess* tells Kidspot.

As Jess* settled into her seat for her flight from Bali to Sydney, all she anticipated was a few hours of entertainment while watching Magic Mike's Last Dance.

But the steamy threequel, full of thirsty dance scenes and all eight of Channing Tatum's abs, was always going to be a risky watch on a packed plane.

And while she had initial reservations about watching it — "I checked whether there might be any kids around " — the coast was clear and she hit play.

"She tapped me on the shoulder and handed it to me..."

Soon enough, Jess was engrossed in the film.

Salma Hayek was having quasi-sex with Tatum in her kitchen, oiled-up dancers rhythmically gyrated on lots of different surfaces, and there was enough of a relationship arc for people to claim 'there was a plot!'.

All in all - she was satisfied with her movie choice. That is, until about a third of the way through when the lady next to her (who had constantly been glancing over) handed her a note.

"She tapped me on the shoulder and gave me a piece of paper," Jess tells Kidspot exclusively.

"I accepted it without even glancing down to see what was written. When I’d taken a quick look, the shock hit me and I went silent. Up until that moment, we’d had very little interactions, so it really caught me by surprise."

The note was about seeking forgiveness for being 'a sinner'

She didn't want to read the note in front of the woman, so she popped it in her bag and headed straight to the bathroom.

"I just kept thinking, 'Why me? It HAD to be me'," Jess recalls.

Once inside the toilet, she opened the note to discover that it was about seeking forgiveness from Jesus for being a 'sinner'.

It read:

"If you want to accept His offer you may pray this prayer:

"Dear Lord Jesus, I realise I am a sinner and I believe you bled and died to pay the price for my sin. I believe that you rose from the dead and you live forevermore. Please forgive me and come into my heart and save my soul. I pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.

"Dear Friend, if you would like:

  • To study the Bible
  • Someone to pray for you
  • Help with a personal problem
  • Someone to visit you
  • To join a youth group
  • A Bible

"Please do not hesitate to let me know."

The encounter didn't end with the note...

Despite the note's message, Jess decided to head back to her seat and continue with the movie.

"It definitely did NOT get through to me," she firmly states. "I’m not hugely religious; I grew up Catholic but as an adult, my views have changed."

However, the encounter didn't end there. Hours later, the woman initiated another conversation about faith and morality.

Jess listened politely, albeit disinterestedly, while she 'lectured' her about the "evils of Satan" and why she "needed the guidance of God."

"I sat there in disbelief. We had a way to go and it was already very late in the day. It was the last thing I wanted to be hearing. I think in any other circumstance, I might have been up for the debate, but all I wanted to do was relax and get home," Jess says.

"So I nodded, put my headphones back on and ignored her the rest of the flight."

So, does she regret her movie selection?

Reflecting on the incident, Jess remains unshaken and even says she'd do it all over again.

"I’ve had my fair share of interesting conversations on flights and they make for funny stories.

"So long as I’ve checked to see whether there are any children nearby who might catch a glimpse, I’ll continue to watch any movie I please.

"It’s part of the in-flight entertainment for a reason! In fact, should they make a fourth Magic Mike, I’ll be sure to watch it on my next trip."
