‘I have never seen such a hideous engagement ring… I hate it’

“I’ve been waiting YEARS to get engaged and I can’t believe this is what he chose,” the woman said as she invited others to shame her ring.

What not to do at a wedding

Today I walked past a couple peering in the window of a jewellery shop, looking at the diamond engagement rings.

Clearly they were newly engaged, and instead of chancing a guess on the perfect ring, the woman’s fiancé decided to involve his future wife in the process.

My first impulse was admittedly old-fashioned, I thought it spoiled the magic of the proposal that he asked her to marry him and then said, “Let’s go shopping”.

But I guess asking and telling what we want is about good communication, and good communication is the foundation of a happy relationship.

Good communication certainly would have helped one woman posting in a ring-shaming group on Facebook.

“I’ve been waiting YEARS for this. I am literally shaking in my boots. Let her rip,” she captioned the photo of the ring.

Woman brutally shames own engagement ring

The woman’s ring was a simple 1.8 carat, princess-cut diamond. If it was a photo on the internet, we’d call the orientation “landscape”. There are no claws, and the band looks gold-coloured.

Of the nearly 400 commenters, nobody liked the ring, calling it “boring” and “hideous”.

“It looks like it’s taking a nap for boring itself to sleep,” one person said.

“Take it off and put it in a drawer where it belongs,” said another.

“Why does it look like one of those plastic beads you get in kids’ necklace making kits,” a third person said.

The disappointed bride-to-be might have taken a page from the book of another woman whose not-so-stealthy hints got her the ring of her dreams.

The woman posted photo updates to Facebook that were totally unrelated to engagements or diamond rings.

“I need to bring this with me everywhere,” she captioned a photo of her iPhone charger.

“I need to get my nails doneeee,” another caption read.

In the background of each photo was the Pandora website, open to a page with a diamond engagement ring.

Hint, hint, get it?
