TASMANIAN vignerons and winemakers will gather in Hobart later this month to showcase their best drops from a variety of vintages at the Red Wine Weekend.

The annual event, organised by Wine South, was launched in 2008 and has been part of the Savour Tasmania Festival since it began in 2009.

But the Red Wine Weekend will be a stand-alone affair this year from May 23 to 24 at Princes Wharf No.1 after the State Government announced plans to take the Savour festival to China to serve Tasmanian produce directly to the Chinese market.

Wine South president Fred Peacock said while it was great news that Savour was heading to China, he had been overwhelmed by the wine industry and consumers wanting the Tasmanian Red Wine Weekend to continue in Tasmania.

This year, the wines will be presented in varietal and style categories so that tasters can compare each wine at each stand.

A total of 64 wines from more than 28 Tasmanian vineyards will give wine lovers the opportunity to meet, greet and chat with the heart of the state’s wine industry.

“Any self-respecting wine region has an annual event, and that’s why it’s so important we continue the Tasmanian Red Wine Weekend,” Wine South vice president Gill Christian said.

This year’s event will include red wine workshops and master classes.

Cost is $25 in advance or $30 at the door, which includes tastings and a souvenir wine glass.
