‘Are you kidding?’: Kmart selling item not usually found in Australia

The budget retailer has sent people into a spin after an eagle-eyed shopper noticed it was selling an item not usually found in Australia.

100 years of Cadbury chocolate in Australia

Aussies and expats alike are losing their minds over an unexpected item currently on sale in Kmart stores around the country.

The budget retailer, beloved for selling everyday items at too-hard-to-resist prices, has recently started selling a selection of chocolate products for the upcoming Easter holiday.

But one eagle-eyed shopper has noticed that a few of the Cadbury eggs aren’t Australian made, but have instead been imported from the UK where the chocolate allegedly tastes very different.

While the recipe for Dairy Milk is exactly the same, slight flavour difference lies in where the ingredients are sourced.

Aussies and Kiwis get chocolate made at Cadbury’s Tasmania-based factory, whereas those in the UK and Ireland get the sweet treat made either in the historic village of Bournville, where the confectionary giant first started making chocolate over 100 years ago or in the Dublin production facility.

It is possible to buy the international version in Australia, but it can only be sourced from various online retailers specialising in British imports.

Coles and Woolies both have international sections, but items stocked in the supermarkets vary and are dependent on import availability.

Unbelievable find on Kmart shelf

It’s not clear how or why Kmart has British and Irish stock, but the retailer has confirmed there are four international Cadbury products on offer, while the rest are all Australian-made.

“Majority of the range is Cadbury Australia products however we have a small number of UK Cadbury products this year,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

The delighted Irish traveller who shared the discovery on TikTok gave a “PSA to expats” living in Australia, with many thanking her for detailing her find.

“Running to Kmart!!!” one responded to her video.

“Omfg. This has made my year,” another agreed.

As another wrote: “I can’t believe it.”

“These are soooooo good,” said someone else.

“Are you kidding me??? I’m going to kmart tomorrow omg!!!” exclaimed one more.

One Brit even said the chocolate “tastes stupidly better” back home than in Australia.

Of course, the internet is never short of a few negative comments, with some expats complaining at the $5 price.

“These things used to be £1 back home,” one claimed.

Mostly though, people were happy they could get their hands on international Dairy Milk.

“IT’S SO MUCH BETTER. Can’t convince me otherwise,” declared one.

“Yes Dairy Milk here is AWFUL,” agreed another.

Cadbury previously shut down rumours Australian chocolate was made with a special anti-melt agent to stop the bars melting in the Aussie heat, which some believed affected the taste.

“It’s about the milk which makes up a substantial part of the product. Cadbury Dairy Milk is made with a glass and a half wherever it’s made,” Meaghan Brodie, Cadbury’s brand manager for Easter chocolate, told news.com.au.

“But we use Tasmanian cows and they are different to UK cows. So, the chocolate always tastes different because it depends on the milk that you’re using and that brings through the flavour.”

Kmart warned that anyone wanting to snag a British or Irish Easter egg might have to check a few stores as the festive season is almost here. The international eggs available include the Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons, Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Nibbles, Cadbury White Chocolate Buttons and Cadbury Mini Eggs.
